I made a Chunky Beanie some months ago using a super chunky yarn I picked up at Lincraft however I was not happy with the final result. The beanie was tight and uncomfortable owing to how extremely chunky the yarn was!

My solution was to find a new yarn which was much softer and see if it solved my problem.

For those of you who are in Australia, I found a really nice soft super chunky yarn at Spotlight. It is called Shiver by Moda Vera. It comes in a lovely range of colours and suited my needs perfectly. The only problem was to find a pattern that suited.

After much searching I came to the conclusion that I needed to make a chunky beanie pattern myself so here it is:

What you need:

Moda Vera Shiver Yarn (1 skein, or more if you would like the beanie to be striped)

9mm Crochet Hook

Yarn Needle (for weaving in ends)

Scissors (for cutting off ends)

 

Stitches we will use:

Ch : Chain

Sl St: Slip Stitch

HDC : Half double crochet

 

Round 1

Start with a magic ring. (If you haven’t done one of these before, visit http://www.planetjune.com/blog/tutorials/magic-ring-right-handed/)

Ch 1. Work 7 HDC into the magic ring and join by using a Sl St into first HDC (7HDC)

Round 2:

Ch 1. Work 2 HDC in each stitch around. Join using a Sl St into first HDC (14 HDC)

Round 3:

Ch 1. *Work 2 HDC in first stitch. Work 1 HDC in second stitch*. Repeat from * to * and join with a Sl St into first HDC (21 HDC)

Round 4:

Ch 1. *Work 2 HDC in first stitch. Work 1 HDC in next 2 stitches*. Repeat from * to * and join with a Sl St into first HDC (28 HDC)

Round 5:

Ch 1. *Work 2 HDC in first stitch. Work 1 HDC in next 3 stitches*. Repeat from * to * and join with a Sl St into first HDC (35 HDC)

Rounds 6 – 16:

Ch 1. Work 1 HDC in each stitch around and join with a Sl St into first HDC (35 HDC)

 

Fasten off using an invisible join and weave in ends.

 

Instructions for Striped Beanie

Option 1 (black, white and orange):3beanie

You will need 3 colours

Round 1 – 6: Colour 1

Round 7 – 8: Colour 2

Round 9 – 13: Colour 3

Round 14: Colour 2

Round 15 – 16: Colour 1

 

Option 2 (white, grey, red):

You will need 3 colours

Round 1 – 6: Colour 1

Round 7: Colour 2

Round 8 – 11: Colour 3

Round 12: Colour 2

Round 13 – 14: Colour 1

Round 15 – 16: Colour 3

 

Option 3 (same navy, yellow and red):

You will need 3 colours

Round 1 – 6: Colour 1

Round 7 – 8: Colour 2

Round 9 – 11: Colour 3

Round 12: Colour 2

Round 13 – 14: Colour 1

Round 15 – 16: Colour 3
